Her story of a tough Broken places book cop turned private investigator reminds me of one of the legendary detectives in modern mysteries, Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone. She physically and mentally bonds with an alien symbiotic organism named Venom and is thus able to stand up and kick ass. Now, two years later, Tracy Clark's debut mystery, Broken Places, is one of the best books I've read this year. And, her shock and suspicion when her actual father turns up is natural for a woman who pretends to need no one.

Next thing Allison knew, she was sitting alone in the ER in Broken places book, North Dakota, waiting to hear if her husband would survive the night. Cass knows better. The raw storytelling pushes readers to consider how we can all change our lives for the better. I highly recommend this book to anyone in search of bettering themselves. My journey to writing science fiction did not start with reading it.

The mystery field is all the better for the addition of Cass Raines. I took a deep cleansing breath and gazed up into the windy sky. What a beautifully haunting book! He hadn't revealed the problems he was having.
